About Me.

Abi McCunn is a multi-instrumentalist in the Sydney jazz and Musical Theatre scene. She specialises in saxophones, flutes and clarinets. Abi completed her studies at the Sydney Conservatorium of Music in 2016, graduating with a Bachelor of Music in Jazz Performance (Saxophone). While studying, she held the lead alto saxophone chair in the Sydney Conservatorium Jazz Orchestra and undertook classical flute and clarinet training. 

 

Abi currently works as a commercial doubler and Sydney Theatre Award nominated Musical Director. She recently performed in L'Hotel at the Foundry Theatre in Sydney as a vocalist as well as reeds, bass guitar and percussion. Her MD credits include MD/Reeds/Orchestrations for Irving Berlin's Holiday Inn at Hayes Theatre Co (Well Done Creative), MD/Reeds for 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, MD/Re-Orchestrations/Reeds for City of Angels (JRP) at the Hayes Theatre which received a Sydney Theatre Awards Nomination, Associate Musical Director/Reeds for Gentlemen Prefer Blondes (Hayes Theatre Co). She has also played reeds for a number of professional musical theatre shows in Sydney including Annie the Musical, Chicago, Moulin Rouge! The Musical, Merrily We Roll Along (Luckiest Productions), Fun Home (STC), Pippin (GFO Productions). She has also depped for professional Sydney productions including Chicago (GFO) and Billy Elliot and has played reeds for A Little Night Music (Hayes Theatre Co), Caroline, or Change (Luckiest Productions), Catch Me if You Can (LPD Productions), In The Heights (Josh Robson Productions), Gypsy (Luckiest Productions) and Cry-Baby (LPD Productions) at the Hayes Theatre. Further to this, Abi has also played for In The Heights, Hear Me Roar and Ziggy Ramo's Black Thoughts at the Sydney Opera House. 

 

Additionally, Abi has also performed with a number of groups and artists, including Basement Jaxx, Marcia Hines, Keli Holiday, PANIA, David Campbell, Courtney Act, Keiynan Lonsdale, Rhonda Burchmore, Leisure, Casey Donovan, Marina Prior and Athesia and is a member of Divergence Jazz Orchestra.​Aside from performing credits, Abi has worked as a conductor and music teacher in schools and has completed the ABODA conducting course. She also arranges and composes with a breadth of work from woodwind covers to more contemporary music.​ In her spare time she recently completed a Bachelor of Laws, receiving First Class Honours and works part time as a litigation paralegal.
